Kit: Airfix #05005
Decal Sheet: Kits-World KW172003

This was the first of my five 1:72nd scale plastic models of the B-17 I have in my stash. This Airfix kit is of the B-17G "American Beauty" of the 834th Sqn, 486th BG, VIII AF.

Construction was pretty straightforward. I built and painted each wing, tailplane, and the fuselage as sub assemblies. Once the plane was decaled, I joined them all together. Typical Airfix kit: some poor fit, lots of tiny rivet details, some molding flash. Added details include air speed pitot tubes on nose, U-shape radio mast on nose, radio wires, blue formation lights, and exhaust staining.

The Kits-World decals were top-notch and went on easily with no problems.

I'm displaying this one on a borrowed Corgi cradle stand.

Here are the pictures:

Here it is on display on the Corgi stand:

A really beautiful build. A late war "we don't care if we are shining in the sun" natural metal B-17 with great weathering and radio mast wire rigging. Certainly sets the standard for us to follow.

Excellent! I always was partial to bare metal B-17s. Your build is really striking and inspiring. I have a few B-17 kits handy and now I want to start one!

The weathering is perfect and the detail painting and decals are top notch. A great way to break in the new forum!
