I did some work on a FM 1/96 scale B-17. I needed to replace the waist machine guns as the originals were broken off. I finished the plane by giving it a black wash to bring out the deeply recessed panel lines.

This was a model sold by Franklin Mint back in the late 80's. A really nice model with many working features. This model came off eBay at a cheap price. It was a little dirty from being displayed and some guns were broken off. A bit of repair and cleaning brought her back quickly.

What an odd scale. scratch I had to do a Google search to find one to check out. You did a nice job with the wash to make things "pop."

Thanks, PW. I forgot to mention, I lined out the glass parts too.

Yes, 1/96 scale. How odd is that? I bought one of these new back in 1988 and loved it. It has working landing gear, turning turrets, spinning props, opening bomb bay doors and the top comes off to reveal a simply detailed interior.

It was a great effort by FM. I only ever owned one of their 1/48 models as the planes as 1/48 is just too big for my display area, especially the bombers are so big and heavy! Too bad FM didn't continue the line in 1/96. They did make a "F" version of a couple planes in painted camo, which I didn't know back then. They sell for  premium now on eBay...

I ABSOLUTELY love the B-17 (at least if it is done correctly - sorry AF1!) so I was naturally drawn to this thread.  I never saw these before and a quick eBay search shows them going for hundreds of dollars.  Occasionally you'll find a damaged one for less.

I like the modification work you did Tom.  It's a nice model to have gracing a desk or shelf.

Thanks, PM. The silver versions usually go for about $60-$100 on eBay. The OD painted versions go for much more...like around $400-$700...at least that is what is asked for them...

I did a quick search and apparently it was quite popular amongst kit manufacturers in the 50s/60s. I found kits of a Lancaster, Vulcan, B-58, HP Victor, P-38, Valiant, Tu-16 etc. Airliners too, and a whole bunch of sailing ship/galleon kits.

Nice job on the B-17, I like the wash Good stuff

Interesting. I never thought of researching the scale. Cool. Lots of companions available....
