Witty Wings/Sky Guardians
WTW-72-015-006
Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) Hawker Sea Fury FB.11 WG578/140
VF 871 Squadron 1953
HMCS Magnificent
1/72 Scale

Year of Production 2007

Below a Sea Fury FB.11 WG575/141 with VX-10 (Trials and Testing Unit)

The Sea Fury FB.11 was selected by the RCN to replace the Seafire Mk. XV. Seventy-four Sea Fury fighters were purchased in 6 separate batches between 1948 and 1953. The RCN's Sea Furys operated from the Aircraft Carrier HMCS Magnificent usually in support of Canada's NATO obligations.

Although Canadian Sea Furys were never flown in combat, they did come close. In 1953 it had been decided that the RCN would contribute a squadron of Sea Furys to operate from one of the Royal Navy Carriers for a tour of duty off the coast of Korea. VF 871 had been selected for Korean Duty and was actively working up for the offensive air support role at CJATC Rivers, Manitoba. However once the Armistice was signed on July 26 the deployment was cancelled.

The Sea Fury was replaced by the jet powered McDonnell Banshee and was struck off RCN strength on April 18, 1957. Most were sold to West Germany as a package deal for spare parts in support of a fleet of target tugs.

The Witty Wings Sea Fury is actually one of their better toolings. This particular model was released in 2007 and overall is a fine representation of a RCN Sea Fury. The only real complaint I have is that the figure used to represent the pilot is on the small side and is rather gnome like in appearance.
