I started this project a few days ago. It is a ILYUSHIN IL-28 BEAGLE by Italeri. So far it isn't a bad kit. There are many multiple part assemblies such as the engines, cockpit and bomb bay that seem rather over designed kit wise. Each engine nacelle is 8 larger parts, not including added small details and landing gear and doors.

The cockpit was a bit of a challenge due to vague instructions on its placement in the fuselage. It took a fair bit of tweaking to get the two level cockpit platforms in to place.

It is assembled now except for the glass and landing gear. That is the next step. Some filling and sanding will be needed too. Here is how it looks like now...

Sounds like a lot of work, but it's a cool subject. Hope the clear parts fit well.

Are you doing it natural metal like the box top? There were some camo'd schemes too I think.

So far, the glass fits okay. I have a mask kit for this plane, so I am fitting the clear parts before painting.

I am pretty boring, preferring the early bare metal finish for my Soviet builds.

The windows were masked and the model has been given a coat of bare metal silver. This is the first time I have used a commercial masking kit and I am really happy with the results.

The plane needs a couple spots filled and painted, but it is nearing completion...

Nice, the framing looks clean and sharp I've used a few pre-cut mask sets with generally good results, but I'm too cheap to buy them for every kit I build Very Happy

I don't have them for many kits as they don't make them for everything. Sad

There are some kits like my B-52 and Tupolev Bear I wish they were made for...lots of intricate glass to mask. I like the material they use for the mask sets. It really sticks well and masks beautifully.

I may have to remove the nose glass on this Beagle and reset it. There is a tiny kink in the fuselage that is making issues with the centerline of the nose section...

I decided to leave the nose glass in it's slightly imperfect position rather than risk damaging the surrounding fuselage and glass. I can live with it as a lesson regarding the fit of parts on this model. The fuselage assembly was pretty delicate in the nose area and the instructions were a bit vague about how to fit the pieces. I will do better next time...lol.

I painted the wheel wells medium grey and the landing gear struts a steel color. The decals gave been placed on the model too. The typical Soviet scheme is pretty plain when it comes to markings. 11 seperate decals in all. The decals worked perfectly with out any treatment. I am using ModelMaster decal set to set the decals in place.

Next step will be giving a coat of gloss cote to the plain and then the painting and installation of the landing gear wheels...

Finally finished. Wheels painted and installed, details painted and aerial strung with stretched sprue.

Nice result Tom, it captures the agricultural look of the original perfectly Smile Did you flat coat the natural metal? It looks less shiny than the previous pics though that could just be the lighting.

Thanks, Mike. It is gloss finished, but the lighting is pretty bad.

It was a good kit. My mood while building it wasn't the greatest but came out better than I expected regardless.

That came out rather well, Tom. I was looking forward to your finishing it as I've thought of getting one of these from time to time. I like Mike's "agricultural look" quote too. It does have a beefy tractor-like look to it (now that he mentions it). Very Happy

Thanks, PW. When the plane is compared to the USAF B-66, it does look pretty primitive.

It is an interesting model to have. Not really well known I guess. I used a huge lead weight beneath the cockpit to keep it on all three wheels. Lots of room in there!

Her are some better pictures of the finished plane...

Is that the weight behind the front gear (the black hole / mass)? scratch I do like the looks of the model and aircraft. Smile

Yes, the wight is just under and behind the pilots cockpit, just forward of the bomb bay.

It was some sort of fishing weight that was glued inside some old British OO scale railway coaches I bought years ago. I removed them but kept them...now they are useful!
