I've waited a long time to finish this kit. I had started to call it the "Ghost Plane" as it was white in its unfinished state and had sat on the shelf for months. Why? Because the vacuum-formed canopy shattered into pieces when I tried to cut it (it was a tad brittle). I tried everywhere to see if I could buy a replacement with no luck. Finally, I searched for, and found, the company web site (Special Hobby / MPM) and emailed them my story. Within a couple of weeks I had an injection-molded canopy from one of the Special Hobby versions of the kit. Awesome service! cheers My sincere thanks to them for their terrific service and help. cheers

The Northrop N-3 PB Nomad

Developed and built by Northrop Aircraft Inc., the N-3 PB was the company's first production aircraft. It was a single-engine float-plane designed for coastal patrol and reconnaissance. It carried a weapons load of either a torpedo, bombs and/or depth charges on the aircraft's center line or under-wing racks. It had a crew of three, and was armed with four fixed .50 caliber machine guns firing forward, and two .30 caliber machine guns firing to the rear (from the cockpit and a dorsal hatch). Twenty-four aircraft were built.

The aircraft was first purchased by the Royal Norwegian Naval Air Service. However, before the aircraft could be built and delivered, Norway was occupied by forces from Nazi Germany. The aircraft were then transferred to the British Royal Air Force to equip the newly formed 330 (Norwegian) Squadron based in Iceland. 330 Sqn. flew convoy escort patrols and attacked U-Boats. By 1943 they were considered obsolete and were removed from service.

The Kit

This is an older MPM kit (# 72038) Parts were in white plastic, generally clean and most fit well. I will say the floats did have fit problems which required quite a bit of work to make right, but nothing really major. The biggest problem was the aforementioned canopy. Decals were very thin, but were crisp and colored correctly. The instructions were clear. Decals are for an early (1941) and late (1943) version of a 330 Sqn. aircraft.

I think this is a great kit of an unusual float-plane. However, I think I would purchase the more updated Special Hobby version as it has the injection-molded canopy and windows in the fuselage (which I had to paint blue on this version). With a little effort a really nice looking model can be the result.

Now that's just plain cool, PW. A beautiful model of a really unusual aircraft, I love that streamlined canopy. The highlighted panel lines look really good too.

I'm thinking it would make an interesting 'what-if' modelled with a conventional undercarriage.

I love this one!  Another unusual plane from the weird plane kit master!  coool

Great job on a very fun build - I'm glad the canopy issue was able to be resolved satisfactorily.

Thank you all for your comments. I have to say I was rather "chuffed" (hopefully that is the correct usage - correct me Hornchurch or PBR) by this one. Very Happy I love my floatplanes and will have to post a pic of them in a group sometime. I believe the SH version also has beaching wheels or a trolley in the kit.
