Hobby Master 1/72 Air Power Series
HA3512
CF-18 "Centennial Hornet" celebrating
"100 Years of Powered Flight in Canada"
2009

July 2012 Release

PRODUCTION LIMITED 800 UNITS

On Feb. 23, 1909, engineer J.A.D. McCurdy piloted the first powered airplane flight by a British subject in the British Empire - and made Canadian history. The plane was called the Silver Dart, and had been built by the Aerial Experiment Association, a group of like-minded aviation enthusiasts dedicated to creating a "practical aerodrome."

In order to celebrate the Centennial of the First Flight in Canada - CF-18 Hornet #188719 was painted in a special Gold paint scheme and appeared at Canadian Air Shows across the country during the 2009 Season. Reminiscent of the famous RCAF "Golden Hawks" Aerobatic Flying team (formed on F-86 Sabres in 1959 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first flight in Canada) the "Centennial Hornet" was an instant hit with Canadian Aviation Enthusiasts.

Hobby Master's version of this aircraft is truly an excellent replica. The fine detail is truly amazing. For instance even the 3 Wing Bagotville logo is clearly printed on the tiny Leading Edge Extension fence. This model also features the improved main landing gear which now has the correct stance. No armament is included as this "Show Bird" never performed with a weapons load attached. Compared to the Pre Production photos I was able to advise William to add the "E" stencil on the forward fuselage for the Ground Power Electrical connection and the port searchlight was increased in size slightly. Thanks again to Hobby Master to acting on suggested improvements and corrections.

All in all a fantastic model - a definite must have for any Canadian theme.

That is a beautiful looking model. Not usually a fan of the CF-18 special schemes but that one is particularly striking. A couple of (standard scheme) CF-18s flew low over my house last week to mark the opening of the 2017 Calgary Stampede, as well as a Griffon helicopter trailing a canadian flag.
